38th Annual Flower Count

When:  25 February to March 3rd, 2014

Where:  Greater Victoria area from Sidney to Sooke, BC

Website:  flowercount.ca

Prizes:  See contests below!

The 38th Annual Flower Count kicks off on Tuesday and Greater Victoria residents are bring encouraged to count their blooms. Victoria Mayor Dean Fortin and Tourism Victoria's CEO Paul Nursey will kick off Flower Count 2014 at the flower beds outside Victoria City Hall.

Each municipality across Greater Victoria is encouraged to take up the challenge to be the “Bloomingest Community” of the Greater Victoria area. People reporting flower counts will have their number attributed to their community. Whether they live on the Saanich Peninsula or in Sooke, every flower counts, for their own community and for the overall total.  Go to flowercount.ca to add your count!

The light-hearted event brings national and international attention to the fact that Victoria (City of Gardens) has the mildest climate in Canada. During the 2013 event, 762,742,426 blooms were counted and the City of Victoria came in as the leading municipality for the third consecutive year.

Grade 4 and 5 teachers/students:  Get Involved TO WIN!  Tourism Victoria is again organizing the counts from schools.  Brenda Knapik of Tourism Victoria said “Every year we encourage all Grade 4 and 5 students in Greater Victoria to join in this fun event by counting all the flowers they can see. Teachers record the results on ‘flowercount.ca’, and the numbers are added to the overall total released to media outlets across North America to show spring arrives in Greater Victoria first!”  The class with the most flowers counted will win admission to The Gardens with travel being provided by LA Limousines.  Details here (pdf)

Not a grade 4 or 5 student?  You can still WIN!  This year's event includes a new social media component. Participants can earn prizes for posting photos and videos to Instagram or Facebook, using the hashtag #flowercount. Tweet out your photos to get more Likes!  The top three photos and the top three videos will win Afternoon Tea and Admission to The Butchart Gardens for two.
