Dogwoods, genus Cornus, are blooming in the gardens. Have you counted the number of different species that we have growing here? Dogwoods used to be called "dog trees" before 1614. Even before that there are references to dogwoods in Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales--in The Knight's Tale, verse 2065, dogwoods are referenced as whippletrees.
