Flower and Garden Report for January 15, 2016

Galanthus at The Butchart Gardens
Even though spring is still a long way away, the garden is beginning to provide us with early glimpses of colour and fragrance that give us a small taste (and hope!) of what is to come. Snowdrops (Galanthus, not the white stuff that falls from the sky!) begin to appear and for some unknown reason they provoke us to look at the rest of the landscape at some of the more subtle flowers. Hellebores, Hamamelis and some of the Viburnums have quietly come into bloom without any fanfare and lighten up many dark corners. However, what really caught me off guard this week was the intoxicating fragrance emanating from the small and discreet flowers of the Sweet Box (Sarcococca) whose rich bouquet permeates and enlivens many corners of the garden.

This week also marks the opening of our spectacular Spring Prelude display. Please read more about this incredible indoor garden in our seasonal newsletter.
