Blue Poppy in bloom

Garden Report for the period of May 21 – May 27, 2015

The warm, dry weather continues to not only benefit our visitors, but it has also been very helpful for our gardeners who are now very close to completing the planting of our spectacular display borders. This year’s summer display is made up of over 900 varieties of plants (approximately 265,000 bedding plants) which are arranged in a myriad of colourful combinations throughout the gardens.

At this time of year our perennial borders are filling out and our collection of Peonies and Irises are highlighting many areas. Blue Poppies continue to dazzle and these special plants are real show stoppers (or visitor stoppers) as they have the ability to literally stop our visitors in their tracks. Without a doubt, they are the most photographed plant in the garden at this time of year.

However, one of my very favorite plants in the garden at this time of year is the Laburnum or Golden Chain tree, whose cascading yellow blossoms form an unforgettable entrance to the garden as you enter from the car parking lot. If you arrive by bus, be sure to make a small detour to check out this outstanding feature.
