Flower and Garden Report for May 5, 2016

Blue Poppy at The Butchart Gardens

The plants that are garnering the most attention right now are the magnificent Laburnums whose brilliant trellises of cascading, golden yellow flowers create a truly spectacular entrance into the Gardens. Another impressive spectacle are the ‘Paul’s Scarlet’ Hawthorn trees that line the exit road - so you are provided with incredible beauty both on the way into and on the way out of the Gardens!

Once you enter the gardens themselves you will still find colourful plantings of tulips, but these delightful plantings are becoming rare as the warm weather continues to take its toll. Other colourful highlights this week include our outstanding collection of Azaleas and Rhododendrons which can be found throughout the gardens as well as some brilliant displays of Himalayan Blue Poppies which are primarily found in the Japanese garden.

The planting of our summer display has started in earnest and it just so happens that this is the earliest start date for summer planting that we can find in our records. This is a great time to come and visit just to be able to witness the amazing transformation that takes place in the garden between the spring and summer seasons.
