Flower and Garden Report September 9, 2016

The rains over the past week have been very welcome by most of The Gardens including the lawns. Unfortunately the Petunias and Geraniums did not enjoy them as much! However, with a little extra deadheading and some expected warmth this weekend, they’re sure to bounce back. One added bonus for the week is we were able to start planting out the first of the Chrysanthemums which will give us great colour into the fall.

If you come out to The Gardens this week, be sure to check out the Mediterranean Garden. This has been one of my favorite areas for quite some time. It’s hard to believe that here in Victoria we can have Palm trees over 20 feet tall, Bananas well over 15 feet tall and an Agave plant over 5 feet in height. There is a lot of great foliage plants in this area as well like Coleus, Cana Lilies and a great variety of Yuccas.

My favorite flowers for the week are the many Lobelias’ interspersed throughout the Gardens. We have numerous varieties with tall flower spikes that add great interest to the garden as well as being a hummingbird favorite. People are always amazed to learn that these are the same family as the blue hanging basket varieties until they examine the blooms. You can find a great bed of Lobelia Complement mix in the Sunken Garden and the Lobelia Starship Scarlet (shown below) located just outside the Rose Garden entrance.
