Self Guided Bicycle Tour to The Gardens

This post is re-blogged with permission from the original Cycle Trek post of May 13, 2013.

Cycling to The Butchart Gardens

The world-famous Butchart Gardens is definitely one of Victoria’s most popular and most visited attractions with close to a million visitors every year. With 55 acres of beautifully landscaped gardens, three restaurants and daily activities during the peak season, it should be high on your list of places to visit during your trip on Vancouver Island.

Not only is it a great spot to visit, but getting to and from the Gardens, especially on a bike, is also an attraction on its own. Here at Cycle Treks, we give you the opportunity to do both: visit the Butchart Gardens and ride the scenic Saanich Peninsula countryside in an easy self-guided day tour.

First, we meet at Cycle Treks at 10 AM for the ride up to the Gardens. We load the bikes on the bus and drive to the Gardens, leaving you with ample time to visit the site and enjoy the beauty of these famous grounds. Established in 1904, it was named a National Historic Site of Canada in 2004.

Once on the site, you will visit the 5 gardens including: the Italian and Japanese Gardens, the famous Rose Garden and even see some totem poles. (The Rose Garden is our favourite when the plants are in bloom!) In season, you can catch a boat tour from the Butchart Cove, which will take you around the waters of Tod Inlet and Brentwood Bay. Amateur photographers will want to bring their best portable gear, as the photo opportunities are endless.

If you’re hungry, stop by the Italian Gardens for a refreshing gelato, or have traditional English Afternoon Tea at The Dining Room Restaurant. For families, there’s also the Blue Poppy Restaurant, with delicious cafeteria-style meals.

Then, when you’re ready to head back to Victoria, you can pick up your Rocky Mountain bike and ride south on the Lochside Trail back to downtown. The Lochside follows the coast of the Saanich Peninsula with a view of the Gulf Islands, and you’ll definitely want to stop along the way to admire the amazing scenery unique to our part of the world.

The ride back is around 25km on an easy, paved trail. Our sturdy bikes will keep you comfortable. With your package, you also get a water bottle, a helmet and a map to guide you back to our store in downtown Victoria.

This day tour is definitely a rider favourite, and is an easy and healthy way to see one of Victoria’s most popular attractions.
