Health and Safety Manager


The Butchart Gardens is looking for someone to fill the following position:


The Health and Safety department assists all staff by working with them to ensure a safe work environment is maintained.  The department oversees all health and safety programs and provides consulting, advisory and training services. The successful candidate, reporting to the Director of Human Resources will be required to:


  • Manage the Occupational Health & Safety Program
  • Maintain a current working knowledge of health and safety regulations pertaining to any work being done at The Gardens and relay this information to management as necessary.
  • Provide advice and support to management regarding corporate safety management systems, disability management programs and emergency management programs for all departments and ensure TBG is in compliance with the Worker’s Compensation Act, the Occupational Health & Safety regulations and other applicable regulatory agencies.
  • Assign and check the work of the Health and Safety Assistant.
  • Ensure all staff follow company Health and Safety policies and procedures
  • Participate in incident investigations and ensure associated paperwork is processed. 
  • Ensure worksite inspections are conducted on a regular basis and any short comings are rectified and associated paperwork is complete.
  • Assist staff, supervisors and managers by answering questions and conducting research on health and safety issues.
  • Ensure coordination, review and evaluation of the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) and implement any necessary changes.
  • Ensure health and safety records are maintained in an accurate and up-to-date manner.
  • Design and conduct training sessions on health and safety issues and maintain a selection of related information for staff.
  • Attend Health & Safety Committee meetings as a resource person.
  • Assist department management in investigating work related illness and injury.  Review all work related accidents to determine trends and recommend corrective action for the prevention of future accidents.
  • Develop, revise and implement H&S policy changes as necessary.
  • Review and as necessary act upon any inspections performed by outside regulatory agencies.
  • Prepare H&S budget annually for Human Resources department review and submission.

REQUIREMENTS: The successful candidate will possess the following qualifications:

  • Minimum 5 years of relevant safety experience in a management or supervisory capacity
  • CRSP (Can, Reg. Safety Professional) or BCIT OH&S Diploma (Occupational Health & Safety) an asset
  • Experience and competence in developing and implementing safety programs
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and a demonstrated ability to conduct themselves in a patient, polite and professional manner.
  • Strong management, interpersonal, and influencing skills at all levels from senior operations to entry level employees.
  • Claims management experience.
  • The ability to provide well thought-out, creative and flexible recommendations to staff and management.
  • Strong background with WorkSafeBC regulations, familiarity with BC Fire Code, Food Safe requirements, Integrated Pest Management, NRC ERD regulation, Environmental Management Act, BC Health Act, Ergonomics.
  • Willingness to quickly learn and embrace The Gardens Policies and Procedures 
  • Competent computer skills in a Windows environment.
  • Valid class 5 Driver’s license with clean driver's abstract.

This person must provide their own CSA Grade A steel toed footwear and work clothing.

WORK SEASON: This is a full-time, year-round position which will commence mid-April 2018. Shifts may vary but will generally be 8am to 4:30pm, Sunday through Thursday. Some Saturday and evening work should be expected.

Remuneration will be commensurate with this level of responsibility and the experience and qualifications of the candidate.
