The Countdown to Christmas is on at The Butchart Gardens


The Butchart Gardens annual Light Up ceremony for the Magic of Christmas is Sunday, December 1st.  The switch is flipped at 5:00pm to officially begin the Christmas season. A family tradition since 1987, The Gardens are transformed with twinkling lights, an outdoor skating rink, festive brass, and traditional carollers. This year, marks the 10th anniversary of the Rose Carousel, and rides are complimentary on December 1st.

Visitors are immediately enchanted when entering The Gardens’ gates as they are greeted with tens of thousands of lights and a multitude of fresh evergreen swags and wreaths. The Twelve Days of Christmas displays placed throughout The Gardens are a long-time favourite. Accompanying features include an Interactive Light Tree and miles of beautiful of cedar garlands. Traditional holiday music, with carollers and festive brass, fills the air. Thousands of poinsettias placed indoors throughout the estate add charm to dining and shopping.

In the former Butchart family home, the Dining Room Restaurant provides a festive atmosphere for Seasonal Afternoon Tea or dinner, with seasonally inspired creations by the culinary team.  For a more relaxed setting, the Blue Poppy Restaurant offers a family friendly option. Sweet treats in the Coffee Shop includes favourites such as gingerbread, shortbread and hot chocolate.

Mark your calendars to skate with the Victoria Royals at The Gardens on Sunday, December 8th from 3:00pm – 4:00pm. Meet the team, along with fan favourite Marty the Marmot, and be sure to get their autographs.

Pet owners should be aware of a change to the Pet Policy in place for the Christmas season.  December 1st – January 6th pets are not permitted between 3:00pm – 8:00pm. Visit the Pet Policy for more details.

December 1st – January 6th The Gardens’ gates are open 9:00am – 9:00pm, and visitors are welcome to stay until 10pm. On Christmas Day, gates open 1:00pm – 9:00pm.  The Seed & Gift Store, with great gift ideas,  remains open until 10pm.

The Butchart Gardens is an internationally renowned 55-acre (22 hectare) display garden located near Victoria, British Columbia. Created in 1904 by Jennie Butchart, and still privately owned and operated by family descendants, The Gardens has been designated a National Historic Site of Canada and welcomes over one million visitors a year.
